Imagine performing your poetry surrounded by beautiful art. Imagine having a venue
where anyone can perform and all are welcome. That’s the idea behind
Kent Talents Poetry Club.
The Club began in November 2023. Since then, on the third Sunday of alternate months (that’s January, March, May, July, September and November) at 6.30 pm, poets from Broadstairs and beyond have gathered to listen to and share their poetry. The evening is hosted by Nancy Charley in the wonderful surroundings of the Kent Talent Art Gallery. Every session features three poets who each have fifteen minutes to share their poems. These are both regulars and poets brought in especially for the occasion. There is also an open mic for anyone who wants to share a couple of poems or a song. Drinks and refreshments are included within the ticket price of £10. The events are cosy and fun and we’ve had some lovely feedback from poets old and new and their guests too..
Nancy Charley
I began writing poetry in 2005 – a later edition to my life which previously had been a
scientific, practical and caring one. Since then, I have fallen in love with the form,
both written on the page and within the art of poetry-telling.
I am passionate in my belief there is no stage-page divide – any poem, whether old or new, when recited well can come to life. I delight in that age-old form of both reading aloud and performing poems – a tradition that has passed through history in the medieval storytellers and bards, the chants of monks and nuns, the middle and upper-class drawing rooms of the Georgian and Victorian period, the music hall and bawdy taverns, through to our own incarnations in the present day.
I have had some of my poems published in books and pamphlets. I also delight in bespoke self-publishing – creating a small object of desire as one of my friends would say. My books include This Woman (Conversation Paperpress, 2012, Eagle’s Nest Publishing, 2021), Little Blue Hut (Smokestack Books, 2017), The Gospel of Trickster (Hercules Editions, 2019), the coincidentally aptly named How Death Came into the World (Smokestack Books, March 2020) and Grace Notes (Eagle’s Nest Publishing, 2023).
I have also created one-woman shows using my poetry. These include Patricia’s Box, Unfinished Building, Feart, The Water-Watcher, and The Gospel of Trickster. These have toured in Kent, London and beyond.
